What is the climate like in the areas we will be fishing in?
Costa Rica's weather is as varied at the fish we fish for.
Tropical days are like early summer in the U.S. and nights can
sometimes be rather chilly so a light jacket is needed.
How many fish can I expect to catch?
These are all wild tropical fish, catching will be relevant
to the anglers' skills. We recommend you practice with the rod,
reel and line you will be using, prior to your visit. Practice on target
casting as sometimes you will only get one chance at a fish!
Will there be rest stops?
Rest stops will be provided both on the road and on the water.
What about the female angler?
Fly-fishing knows no gender, therefore we welcome all anglers to come and
enjoy our unique trips.
What clothes should I bring?
Light weight summer clothing, long pants, long sleeve shirts,
hat, sunglasses, sunscreen 40+ and light weight rain gear.
Sandals, Tennis shoes and ankle socks advised.
What about the non-angler in my group?
Arrangements for trips which will be of interest to the non-angler can be arranged.
Is age a factor?
We are prepared to handle anglers aged from 9 to 99.
What documents should I have?
A Passport! It should be kept with you at all times.
What is the quality of available medical service?
You are asked to advise us of any special health needs you may
require. All special medications should be brought with you..
Medical Care in Costa Rica is very good.
Are there a lot of biting Insects?
A good insect repellent combined with long pants usually deters
our evening visitors.
Can I use American(US) dollars?
Yes, but make sure notes are NOT damaged.
Do the Guides speak English?
Absolutely!
What distances do we drive and time involved?
San José to Caño Negro takes about 4 hours; San José
to La Fortuna takes about 3.5 hours; San José to San Gerardo de
Dota (Trout River) takes about 2.5 hours; Caño Negro to La Fortuna
takes about 1.5 hours.
What tackle should I bring?
Fly rods depending on the trip chosen range from 3/4wt. to 12wt.
6 to 10wt. will usually handle all our tropical fish. Reels
should match the rod, with appropriate backing for the size of
line. Floating line is usually sufficient but an extra spool
of sinking line may be brought.
Flies, Bass Bugs, Medium Poppers, Clouser Minnows, Crazy Charlie's as
well as large nymphs, and the usual compliment of trout flies. We also
have custom tied flies available for purchase.
Is tackle available?
Yes, but with the condition: "You break or loose it, you buy it".
Are hotels air conditioned?
Air-conditioning or fans are in all our hotels.
What do we do about gratuities?
10% of the total cost of the trip is acceptable,
or otherwise left to the discretion of the client.
Do we need fishing licenses?
Yes. Fishing licenses are $10 (US) per day. Park entrance fees also apply.
Is there available telephone communication?
Yes.
